In my new podcast episode, I discuss the tragic disaster of the OceanGate Titan Submersible. In a longer-than-usual episode, I discuss how we can’t underestimate complexity and risks. Deep sea exploration is an extremely complex endeavor, with engineering requirements even more complicated than space exploration. When you add on top of this complexity, human lives are at risk when things go wrong, requiring the ultimate caution. I also examined how controversial engineering, design, and material decisions may be at the center of this tragic event. I also discussed how some business decisions can sometimes make a project precarious. Finally, I compare the media coverage of this event with the migrant ship that sank close to Greece last week, killing at least 80 people trying to flee from hunger and misery. It seems tragedy among wealthy people is more “interesting” to watch than tragedy among those with nothing. It is something that all of us reflect on as a society. Both are dramatic tragedies, and both could be avoided 😔 I’d like you to join me in learning from this. It is the minimum we should do to respect the lives lost in this tragic event.
