Hello! I came across this post from Victoria Repa about the importance of reading people, and it made me think about how underrated this skill is in project management. Projects rarely go off track because of the plan alone. More often, it happens because something beneath the surface isn’t being addressed. A team member who suddenly becomes quieter. A stakeholder who keeps saying “everything looks good” but seems hesitant to make a decision. A meeting where everyone agrees, yet you leave with the feeling that not everyone is actually aligned. As project managers, we spend a lot of time tracking timelines, risks, budgets, dependencies and deliverables. But there’s another layer we need to manage: people. For me, reading the room is less about interpreting individual gestures and more about noticing changes and patterns. Good project management isn’t just about keeping the work moving. It’s about creating an environment where people feel comfortable enough to tell you when something isn’t working. That’s where observation becomes a leadership skill. Do you agree?
